Current Sustainable Practices in Europe’s Livestock Sector
As part of the LIVECoVET project, we are closely analyzing the needs of the livestock market while observing the sustainable practices already in place across Europe. Farmers are adopting approaches that balance productivity, animal welfare, and environmental stewardship.
Some of the key practices include:
Environmental approaches & quality schemes
- Organic certification, IGP, Label Rouge, and HVE schemes
- Publicly funded environmental measures, such as eco-schemes
System coherence & holistic thinking
- Diversification of farm activities and increased autonomy
- Conservation agriculture and adoption of renewable energy
These practices show that livestock farmers are not only responding to regulatory requirements but also proactively shaping more resilient and sustainable farm systems. By understanding what works on the ground, LIVECoVET can design training programs that truly address farmers’ challenges, combining green and digital skills to strengthen both productivity and sustainability.
Through ongoing market analysis and dialogue with farmers, the project is identifying the most effective interventions and practical tools. This ensures that the training provided will be hands-on, context-specific, and immediately applicable, helping European livestock farms thrive while transitioning to greener and more resilient models.
