LiveCoVET: Understanding the training needs of the livestock sector
The LIVECoVET Project (Livestock Innovation Environmental Future: Centre of Vocational Education and Training) is a European initiative coordinated by KU Leuven, with partners from Belgium, Greece, Portugal, Romania, France, Luxembourg, Spain, and Italy.
Its main goal is to strengthen vocational education and training (VET) in the livestock sector by integrating innovation, sustainability, and digital transformation into the curricula and professional development of future farmers and trainers.
As part of Work Package 2 (Needs Analysis), LiveCoVET conducted several surveys among farmers, trainers, and professionals to better understand the challenges and opportunities that define the current state of livestock education.
Below, we summarise some of the key results obtained from this analysis, focusing on training, sustainability, and digitalisation in the livestock sector.
1. The Need for Practical, Farm-Based Training
One of the most significant findings is the clear demand for hands-on training on farms.
Respondents highlighted that real-world, practical experience is essential to prepare students for modern livestock production and sustainable farming systems.
Training programs should therefore include on-site learning, farm visits, and experiential approaches that bridge the gap between theory and practice.
2. Updated Educational Materials and Trainer Development
Many participants noted that current training programs do not fully reflect the sector’s realities.
They stressed the need for:
- Up-to-date educational materials aligned with today’s technologies and environmental standards.
- Continuous professional development for teachers and trainers.
- Educational content that addresses sustainability and animal welfare as core values.
These insights reinforce the importance of equipping trainers with modern resources and methodologies to ensure quality and relevance in vocational education.
3. Digitalisation as a Driver of Change
Digitalisation is rapidly transforming the livestock industry.
Respondents recognised the value of digital tools and precision farming technologies for improving farm efficiency, monitoring animal welfare, and supporting sustainable practices.
The surveys show a growing interest in training that includes digital literacy, use of smart devices, data management, and precision livestock farming.
4. Towards Inclusive and Accessible Training
Another important aspect highlighted by participants is the need for inclusive access to training.
Certain groups — such as young people, rural populations, and those with limited access to technology — face barriers in participating in VET programs.
To address this, stakeholders suggested:
- Flexible and blended learning formats (online + in-person).
- Financial support mechanisms.
- Training materials adapted to different learner profiles.
LIVECoVET aims to ensure that no group is left behind in the transition towards a sustainable and digital livestock sector.
5. Collaboration and Continuous Dialogue
Several respondents expressed interest in participating in focus groups and maintaining collaboration with trainers, farmers, and institutions.
This demonstrates a strong willingness to co-create solutions that respond to real needs and foster innovation through dialogue.
Such collaboration will be essential for shaping the next generation of vocational training programs under LiveCoVET.
The findings from the Work Package 2 Needs Analysis provide a clear picture of where the livestock sector stands today — and where it needs to go.
There is a strong call for more practical, digital, inclusive, and sustainability-driven training that prepares professionals for the future of livestock production.By listening to the sector and turning these insights into action, LiveCoVEt reinforces its mission to build a European centre of excellence that connects innovation, education, and sustainability in the livestock industry.
